Telepresence Trial at Huawei HQ, Shenshen, China

On Friday, May 27, 2011 Huawei invited the delegation of INTUG (International Telecommunications Users Group) and IDTUG (the Indonesian Telecommunications Users Group) to visit their Headquarters at Shenshen, People's Republic of China to have a view of their manufacturing facilities and its R&D facilities.

The delegation was received by Mr. Zhang Chunxiang, Deputy Secretary General of Huawei International Advisory Council and Mr. Charlie Cheng, Director of Government & Industry Relations. A presentation was given on how Huawei can achieve in a period of 15-years to become a strong global manufactoring of various telecommunications products that can directly compete with the much older global manufacturing companies.

During the tour of the facilities, the delegation was given the opportunity to test a video teleconferencing or Telepresence at the Huawei HQ between Shenshen and Beijing Office with distance of several thousand kilometers. It appeared that the other side of the conferencing party was as close as real local conferencing, with almost no communications time delays, because of the use of Broadband transmission speed of at least 1 Gbit per second.

Meeting between INTUG, IDTUG and Hong Kong OFTA

The meeting between INTUG, IDTUG and the Telecommunications Regulator of Hong Kong, namely the Office of Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) was held at the OFTA Headquarter in Hong Kong on Thursday, May 26, 2011.

It was very interesting to know that OFTA did not defined specifically what a broadband speed is, but left the Broadband Speed definition to each operators and the customers/users who will choose the best service, because it is a competitive market.

But in practice, the broadband speed of Hong Kong Telecommunications network is at least several megabit per seconds up to 1 GBit/seconds. This was made possible because of the extensive network of ADSL and Fiber Otpics available in Hong Kong.
